PROGRAMME NOTE

“I committed silences and darkness to paper,

I recorded the inexpressible.
I took the measure of vertigo.”

– Arthur Rimbaud

In this work, seven players trace their paths across a territory of four autonomous musical terrains. Sometimes moving on their own and sometimes occupying separate strata within the same terrain, creating an ever-changing kaleidoscope of musical constellations.

It Measures Itself Against the Vertigo Caused by Its Own Abyss was commissioned by Festival Dag in de Branding and written between May and August 2018. It was first performed by the New European Ensemble at Korzo Theatre during the 49. edition of Festival Dag in de Branding.
